I too sometimes have that naggy voice telling me I have to post today. I know this might sound crazy coming from a social media expert, but what if we just ignored that naggy voice?
Now obviously, if you haven’t posted for weeks (or even months!), then yes, creating a post could really do with being on your to-do list today. You don’t have to overthink it; just re-introduce yourself. Who are you? What’s your business all about? Why is it important? What do you love most about the work you do? What keeps you going on those tougher days? You could answer all those questions in one post, or that could be 5 post ideas for you right there!
But if you posted yesterday or in the last few days, then what would happen if you told that naggy voice that you don’t HAVE to do anything? Before you do, I’ve got three questions for you.
1 – Why do you feel this way?
If you feel like you have to post to avoid upsetting the algorithm gods, I want you to consider how much value a post would give your audience today. By posting too many “filler” posts, your audience stops trusting you and will start scrolling past your posts much quicker. That is a behaviour that the algorithm will pick up on and remember. Posting today might help you today, but is it actually doing you a disservice long-term?
If you set yourself a challenge, then I’d definitely post! It’s so valuable to set yourself little challenges like posting daily for a week (or even reducing your usual number of posts) because it gives you very valuable information about what works with your audience.
If you’re feeling like sales are scarily slow, then move on to my next question. Posting today while you’re feeling desperate will likely lead to a post more about your problems than about your audience’s.
2 – What can you do instead?
Social media is all about having conversations. Your posts serve as great conversation starters, but they aren’t the only way to have those valuable conversations. Spend some time actively engaging and challenge yourself to comment at least 10 words every time you’re drawn to that ‘like’ button. If your feed isn’t showing you the kind of posts you want, go looking for them. Use the search bar to find people who are publically looking for a solution you offer. Check out those you’ve recently engaged with you. Spend some time in your favourite Facebook Group. Follow up with people that you’ve already started talking to. Have a look through some Stories – and engage with them!
You don’t have to start the conversation to really benefit from them.
3 – When will you post again?
Giving yourself permission to not post today can be a powerful move, but only if it’s strategic. If you’re not posting today because you’re finding other ways to have those conversations, when will you be posting next? How long are you giving yourself to create that next post?
Permanently ignore that voice
There’s only so many times we can ignore that voice before it starts to kind of have a point. If you want to quieten it long-term, then let’s have a chat! Through my part-management packages, I can create the essential content for you so you can focus solely on engaging in those conversations – and you can obviously still post when you WANT to.
