We’re getting to that awkward time of year when we have to ask ourselves, “When do we start thinking about Christmas?” – and if I wasn’t a marketer, I would say we shouldn’t even mention the C word until December. But with the Christmas aisles appearing and people already starting their shopping, as a marketer, I have to say that it’s not too early.
Even if I am sat in the sunshine with an ice cream as I write this!
Avoid the panic strategy
If it feels right – now!
I have now posted about Christmas on almost all my clients’ accounts. Not in a loud way, not in a pushy way, but we have started. On my own account, I started on the 16th of September, as that was the last day we had triple digits in our countdown to the big day. On some accounts, we’ve taken a “Hands up if you’re already thinking about it” approach; on others we’ve taken a “How do you want to feel in three months time?” approach.
The goal right now isn’t to actually make sales, it’s to be seen and to be in people’s minds as soon as they do start shopping. A gentle trickle of festive posts is always going to beat a last-minute panic.
Remember that, on average, people need to see something seven times before they buy it. The last thing you want is to be scrambling to get seven posts out and seen three days before you close for Christmas.
But to be honest with you, I’m not going full Christmas Campaign anywhere until mid-November!
It doesn’t have to be loud
Social media can always feel like a battle to see who can shout louder; combine that with Christmas, and it can feel deafening. But your Christmas Campaign doesn’t actually need to be loud; it needs to be strategic and intentional.
If your core message for the season is clear, you can build off that. Suddenly, instead of each post having to carry all the weight, your posts work together to achieve one goal. It feels easier, and your audience remembers you more – it’s a win-win!
As you head into this new season, there are three main things to remember:
- Repurposing isn’t lazy! Repeat yourself, say the same thing differently, reinforce that message again.
- A plan gives you the freedom to have some fun! Get what has to be said ready to go, and then you can just have fun with it.
- Everything you do leads back to one goal, one message, one intention.

You don’t have to do it alone
If you need a strategy to build your strategy, I’ve got just the thing! I’ve teamed up with Nicola Mansfield at Film Your Face, a video expert, to create the Core Content Kit, Christmas Edition.
Our goal is to help you create fun and powerful content in a time-efficient way. This is going to allow you to not only build a strategy that works for you, but to execute it and get all your festive content sorted. It’s not all about video; it’s about communicating that core message in different ways, so it really gets remembered.
