Give your audience a reason to follow you

Three women laughing and consuming social media content together.

Do you ever feel like posting on social media is like shouting into the void? Do you feel like no matter how much time you spend on creating a value-packed post, nobody is listening?

Why should we follow you?

I believe that social media marketing is about creating a mutually beneficial relationship between you and your target audience. They support your business, encourage you and help you reach more people. By following you, they are giving you permission to add some salesy posts to their feed. But what do they get in return?

When you follow me on social media, I aim to also bring you encouraging and inspirational posts. I want you to feel like, even though you are managing your own social media, you are not alone. I want you to feel like everything you achieve on social media, no matter how small, is worth celebrating. I want you to feel like you aren’t behind and like that step forward isn’t unreachable.

Don’t know what to give your followers?

I’m not saying it’s easy to know why people should follow you, especially if you’re a product-based business. You’ve got things to sell, you want people to buy, but unfortunately, people don’t hang out on social media just to be sold to.

Pay attention to how people describe you. If you don’t know how to show up on social media, pay attention to how people say you show up in person. Are you a treasure-trove of knowledge? Are you calming and understanding? Are you bubbly and fun? Do you not take yourself too seriously?

Consider what you want to be known for. When you write a story, you have to show, not tell. When you promote your business, it’s not enough to tell people that you’re knowledgeable or approachable; you need to show them.

Ask your audience. Every single follower pressed the follow button for a reason. That reason might be because they want to support you as a small business, it might be that they love your approach, or it might be that a particular post really resonated with you.

How easy is it to follow you?

You’ve written a great post, and someone comes to check out your page to decide whether or not they want to follow you. How easy are you making that decision for them?

• Are they going to read your bio and know you are talking to them?

• Are they going to see your recent posts and feel the extra salesy posts in their feed are worth it for the rest of your content?

• Are they going to feel seen, understood and welcome?

Your page should make your target audience tap that follow button immediately – and it’s even better if it makes people who aren’t your target audience resume their doom-scrolling.

Feeling unsure about your social media goals?

“Everyone needs a PowerHour with Tesni! Not only did Tesni share her expertise about the various socials but she gave me a great opportunity to rethink what I have been posting. She encouraged me to go back to basics, to turn 180° and think again about where my focus should be, about where my readers and audience will benefit from my interactions, and therefore how to make creating content more fun for me to do. We looked at all the usuals, we looked at a couple of smaller platforms – all of which have value and I now have some work to do, but I know what direction I want to go in.” – Rosie Diver.
